Frisco ISD’s newest campuses prioritize ‘future-ready’ learning designs

Construction for the Buddy and Joni Minett Elementary School begins this month, according to Frisco ISD. The school, named after two longtime Frisco leaders, will open in 2022 in the northwest corner of the district adjacent to the Somerset Park and Hollyhock neighborhoods.

Stantec is leading design for the district’s 43rd elementary school. The same firm designed Emerson High School, which opens in August.

Minett Elementary will include “flexible spaces... ideal for collaboration and active learning,” according to the district website. The campus design also incorporates outdoor learning spaces. As the district expands its architectural footprint, officials have prioritized creating what they call “future-ready” learning spaces.

FISD is also planning an intermediate campus for students in grades 5 and 6. The school, which does not have a formal name yet, is scheduled to open in the fall of 2023.

Huckabee architects released a working layout for the three-story campus at an April FISD board of trustees meeting. The firm has designed projects for districts across the state, including Prosper ISD, Little Elm ISD and Lewisville ISD.

Like Minett, the district’s first intermediate school will feature designs that encourage flexible and collaborative learning.

The district site states that attendance zones for the new campus will be released next fall, but the school is expected to relieve Comstock, Elliott, Ogle and Isbell elementary schools, as well as Scoggins, Lawler and Vandeventer middle schools. It will be between Dr. Kenneth Cooper Park and Alma Road in McKinney’s Craig Ranch community.
