Double Dip Frozen Custard

The highlight of Double Dip’s menu, however, has always been the custard. Diamond said Double Dip’s custard recipe is “its own.” The shop makes only vanilla (which is 90 percent fat free) and chocolate, and those are made fresh each day; freezing/preserving overnight turns custard into cement, Diamond said.

“We start the day with about five buckets of vanilla and one of chocolate,” Diamond said. “We’ll make more chocolate as the day goes on, depending on business.

“A lot of folks ask why we only have two flavors, they ask why we don’t have strawberry. But we’ve got so many varieties of toppings—over 40 on the menu—that you can basically customize your custard however you want.”

Double Dip also has a selection of hot dogs and sandwiches. There are five different styles of “Double Dip Famous Hot Dogs.” Sandwich offerings include chicken salad, smoked turkey, roast beef and barbecue.

Converted from a former Dairy Queen, Double Dip was established to bring back the days of a neighborhood malt shop, Diamond said.

Pet owners also bring their dogs for a “poochie” cone ($1.10).

“Some of our customers say if they have their dog in the car, drive by and don’t stop, the dog lets them know about it,” Diamond said. “I’ve seen a lot of pictures and videos of our customers here with their dogs. It just adds to the atmosphere we want to have.”
