The city of Frisco gathered Sept. 19 to celebrate the grand opening of Northwest Community Park.
Designed as a first-of-its-kind park geared toward cyclists, the park includes a splash pad, public art, playgrounds, shade structures, grills, restrooms, miles of hike-and-bike trails, a prairie observation deck and a reinvestment in the region’s Blackland Prairie.
The details
Construction on the 122-acre Northwest Community Park began in January 2025. The space was originally intended for sports fields and facilities, but plans changed after the area’s topography was determined to be better suited for trails.
The park is designed for cyclists of all skill levels, with 88.9% of trails rated easy, 8.1% rated intermediate and 3% rated advanced. The prairie observation deck also features gravity trails and ramps for cyclists to jump.
Northwest Community Park also features a 20-acre lawn, three playgrounds—including one with a 20-foot-tall bison play structure—a five-acre dog park, two mini zip lines and an outdoor classroom where groups can learn more about the endangered Blackland Prairie.
City leaders emphasized preserving local Blackland Prairie soils and plants during construction, adding more than 1,300 elm and oak trees and planting more than 1,000 pounds of native seeds.
The park’s grand opening featured a ribbon-cutting ceremony, a commemorative bike ride with the Dallas Off-Road Biking Association, food trucks, vendor booths and a balance bike ride for kids.

“There are so many things about this park that touch so many different parts of our community,” Frisco Mayor Mark Hill said. “One other aspect I love is we now have a great venue for 5Ks.”
“This park is unique because it has so much community input … it’s really exciting to see that this is everybody’s vision that’s being realized today,” Frisco Community Development Corporation chair Chad Brubaker said. “We invest in projects that make everyday life better for our residents. Northwest Community Park brings that commitment to life.”
Frisco Capital Improvement Projects Manager Ricardo Sanchez worked with ecologists to protect the region’s soil and grasslands, saying “Progress isn’t always about how much we build, but how much is worth preserving.”
“Blackland Prairie is the most endangered ecosystem in North America, less than one percent of this ecosystem exists in the world today and a little bit of that one percent is right here in this park,” Sanchez said. “We didn’t just want to place a park on this land; we wanted to create a park that belongs to this land.”
What else to know
City documents state the park cost $40 million to construct, which was funded by bonds.
Northwest Community Park will follow the same hours as other city parks, opening 30 minutes before sunrise and closing 30 minutes after sunset.
