Denton receives $1M grant from U.S. Department of Transportation

The U.S. Department of Transportation awarded the city of Denton a $1 million grant to develop an intelligent transportation system master plan, according to federal documents released in mid-June.

Some background

City officials submitted a Innovative Finance and Concession Grant application in September 2025. The grant is designed to fund public-private partnerships and find creative ways to use existing assets, according to the department's website.

“The funding will be allocated towards the development of the city of Denton's inaugural comprehensive Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) Master Plan,” Denton Transportation Director Farhan Butt said in a social media post.

The U.S. Department of Transportation awarded grants to three different entities in Texas. In addition to Denton, the Capital Metropolitan Transportation Authority in Austin and Harris County each received $1 million and $999,000, respectively.

Looking ahead

The grant will fund the plan, which will integrate data analytics, sensors and communications into the city’s transportation infrastructure, according to a news release from the department.

“Transportation staff will collaborate with the USDOT and Denton finance department to finalize the grant agreement and outline the next phases of this project,” Butt said in the social media post.
