George Ferrie used a late surge in voting to claim a spot on Denton's City Council.
Ferrie led after early voting, then trailed after the initial 39 precincts were reported. When final results were posted with all 68 precincts reporting, Ferrie concluded a comeback win.
Ferrie finished with 7,769 votes, or 50.43%, beating Erica Garland. She received 7,636 votes, or 49.57%, according to the final update from the Denton County Election Office.
Ferrie will serve a two-year term and be sworn in June 23.
Overall, Denton had 31,776 voters turn out for this race, which also featured a runoff for Mayor. That was 18.77% of the 169,318 registered voters, according to the county election website.

Erica Garland has taken the lead in the Denton City Council Place 5 race.
With 39 of 68 precincts reporting, Garland has 7,475 votes, or 50.05%. George Ferrie has 7,460 votes, or 49.95%, according to an update from the Denton County Elections Office website.
Ferrie held a slim 19-vote lead after early voting results were released.
The latest election update shows 28,506 votes have been cast, or 16.83% of the 162,318 registered voters.

Unofficial early results show George Ferrie leads the City Council Place 5 runoff race for the city of Denton.
According to the unofficial early voting totals released from the Denton County Elections Office website, Ferrie secured 6,345 votes, or 50.07% of the votes tallied so far. Erica Garland received 6,326 votes, or 49.93%.
The winner will serve a two-year term and be sworn in June 23.

The runoff follows the May 2 election, where neither candidate earned over 50% of the initial vote, which led to the two candidates who received the most votes to face off in June. Garland received the most votes with 48.84%, and Ferrie trailed with 47.94%.
The third candidate, Caleb Meese, received 3.2% of the vote, according to previous reporting.
Overall, 15.11% of registered Denton County voters either turned out for early voting or mailed in a ballot, according to the county's election website. There are 169,318 registered voters in the county, according to the website.
