Texas Woman’s University ceremonially broke ground on its Chaney Athletics Complex on Oct. 23.
The $30 million facility will be constructed on land next to the university’s Pioneer Soccer Park and is expected to cover approximately 35,000 square feet, according to a university news release.
The details
The Chaney Athletics Complex will include a practice gym, locker rooms, weight room, sports medicine clinic, batting cages, coaches’ offices and meeting spaces, according to the release. Construction will begin in spring 2027 and conclude by the end of 2028.
Funding for the complex kicked off earlier this year with a $10 million gift from its namesake Dawn S. Chaney, a TWU alumna and former three-sport student-athlete who earned bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees in kinesiology from the university, according to previous reporting.
TWU does not have a dedicated, student-supported athletics fee and state taxpayer money cannot be used to fund athletics programs or scholarships, so donations are especially important for the university’s athletics programs and student-athletes, Chancellor Carine Feyton said.
“When we give back, we help the millions and millions who will come after us,” Chaney said.
Why now?
The facility is intended to alleviate a space shortage that has escalated during a period of growth for TWU’s Pioneer Athletics, per the release. Over the past six years, the university has expanded from five varsity sports to nine and more than doubled its student-athlete population.
Sandee Mott, executive director of athletics, said the facility will help boost support to current student-athletes, give coaches better resources to build successful programs and attract prospective student-athletes.
“We are not building this complex simply to solve today’s space problems, we are building it because we believe in where TWU Athletics is going,” Mott said.
What else?
Donations to the project have reached $20.5 million, more than two-thirds of the funding goal, the release states.
