Denton ISD announced it will open a new elementary school within Landmark, an upcoming master-planned community, as part of a collaboration to coordinate schools alongside the new development.
What’s happening?
The 12-acre site for the elementary school is the first of three planned DISD school sites within Landmark, a 32-acre mixed-use development, according to a news release from the district. The other two schools will be another elementary school and a middle school.
Funding from the 2023 voter-approved $1.4 billion district bond was used to acquire the land, the release states. The referendum passed by 62% for Proposition A, which covers proposed projects, and Proposition B, which covers campus technology, according to the district’s website.
"Planning for future schools begins long before classrooms are built," DISD Superintendent Susannah O'Bara said. "Acquiring this site gives us the flexibility to prepare for future growth, and we'll work closely with the community to ensure any future campus reflects the needs of the students and families it will serve."
Zooming out
The $10B master-planned community broke ground in November 2025 and will feature more than 6,000 single-family homes, 3,000 multifamily units and 1,100 acres of park space over the course of its 40-year build-out, according to previous reporting.
"From the beginning, Landmark has been designed as a complete community where families can live, work, learn and connect," said Andrew Pieper, senior vice president of Hillwood Communities and residential project manager for Landmark. "Working with Denton ISD to identify future school sites ensures Landmark is prepared to support the families who will call this community home for generations."
Houses for the first phase of the development, which includes about 750 homes, are already for sale, according to previous reporting. The community is located at I-35W and Robson Ranch Road in Denton.
Looking ahead
Students who currently live in Landmark attend Rayzor Elementary School, Harpool Middle School and Guyer High School. A date for the construction of the new schools will be determined by the enrollment trends and school campus capacity.
DISD enrollment projections show that the district is expected to hit 38,500 students by the 2034-35 school year, a 5,000-student increase. The release states Landmark could eventually house 10% of Denton’s residents.
"Creating a successful neighborhood requires long-term coordination and investment in the infrastructure that supports everyday life," said Kimberly Cole, vice president at Hillwood Properties and commercial project manager for Landmark. "The future school site is another example of how Landmark is being thoughtfully planned, bringing together homes, schools, retail, commercial development and the amenities families rely on every day."
New attendance boundaries, future campus construction, design updates and opening dates will go through the planning and public engagement process through the district, the release states. Part of that engagement process includes looking into enrollment needs in real time and listening to community comments.
