The classes will be hosted by Alejandra Phillips, an RISD Family Engagement Program specialist with more than two decades of experience connecting parents with schools. The program will teach parents how to take a more active role in parenting, school involvement and their student’s academic success through volunteer opportunities on their campuses, according to district officials.
There will be eight, 90-minute classes held over the course of a week. RISD will hold its first classes Nov. 30, with a session held from 8:15-9:45 a.m. at the RISD Academy and 1-2:30 p.m. at Aikin Elementary School. The district will hold two additional classes Dec. 1, including a morning session from 8-9:30 a.m. at Thurgood Marshall Elementary School and an afternoon class from 1:15-2:45 p.m. at O’Henry Elementary School.
On Dec. 5, classes will be held at Carolyn Bukhair Elementary School from 8:30-10 a.m. and at Spring Valley Elementary School from 1:15-2:45 p.m. The final pair of classes will be held Dec. 6, with a session from 9-10:30 a.m. at Dover Elementary School and from 1:30-3 p.m. at Richardson Heights Elementary School.
The classes are designed to help families eliminate the achievement gap by bridging the home-to-school connection. All parents are welcome to attend one of the upcoming classes, with teachers, counselors and principals also encouraged to invite parents to attend the sessions.
