Two new crosswalks are set to be installed soon near Richland High School after Prosper Town Council unanimously approved the project following concerns from residents and Prosper ISD.

What you need to know

At its Aug. 26 meeting, Prosper Town Council unanimously approved a contract with Wopac Construction Inc. to install new crosswalks nearby Richland High School.

The crosswalks were initially scheduled to be constructed alongside the permanent traffic light at the First Street and Artesia Boulevard intersection, but safety issues sped its implementation up, according to town documents.

The new crosswalks will include:
  • Prairie Road crosswalk: will connect the Lakes of Legacy neighborhood to the northern side of Prairie Road
  • First Street crosswalk: will connect Artesia Boulevard to First Street

Some context

At a town council meeting June 24, nearby residents with children attending Richland High School spoke about their concerns regarding the high traffic at the intersection.

Tim Holden, resident of the Artesia development, said he was worried about kids walking from the neighborhood to the high school without crosswalks, particularly near the intersection of Teel Parkway and First Street.

One more thing

The crosswalk installations will be funded through Prosper’s traffic improvement fund under the capital improvement program. Additionally, the work will be completed under an existing contract Town Council awarded to Wopac Construction in September 2024, according to town documents.
