Plano ISD teachers and staff will see raises heading into next school year following approval of the district’s compensation plan.

What happened

The PISD board of trustees approved during its April 2 meeting a 3% raise for current teachers and staff as well as a salary increase for new teachers for the 2024-25 school year.

The starting salary of $61,000 for first-year teachers is an increase from $60,002 in 2023. The 3% raises for current staff and teachers is on par with the raises the district approved before this school year.

Raises for hourly employees in hard-to-fill positions will also be increased, PISD Chief of Employee Services Duana Kindle said. Minimum pay for bus drivers will increase from $22 to $24 per hour, while minimum pay for bus driver assistants and self-contained paraprofessionals will increase from $15 to $17 per hour.

“We want to make sure we stay competitive,” Kindle said.

Some context

The increase to the starting salary for teachers is needed to remain competitive with other districts in the area, Kindle said.

The 2023-24 starting salary of $60,002 was comparable to 17 North Texas districts that PISD officials consider “peers.” Dallas ISD was near the top of that list with a $61,000 starting salary and is also projecting a $1,000 raise heading into next school year, according to a presentation from DISD’s April 2 budget workshop.
