“As you walk through the dining room, you go from a great bar experience to more of an outdoor hacienda feel,” Mexican Sugar President Christine Magrann said. “Our kitchen is wide open, and you can feel the love coming out in this Latin cooking. A lot of produce comes in our back door, so they are always chopping, prepping and creating beautiful dishes.”
On the menu
The top selling menu items at Mexican Sugar in Plano are the angus ribeye fajitas, roasted chicken enchiladas, bone-in pork chops and roasted beet and goat cheese salad.
“People see [angus ribeye fajitas] as an unbelievable value [$34] for a perfectly cooked piece of ribeye,” Magrann said.
What else?
The restaurant offers brunch, lunch, dinner, drink and happy hour menus.
“Our margarita flights are very fun, and they change seasonally,” Magrann said. “People come in for a few of the more indulgent brunch items like our french toast. They don't expect us to have really good French toast and pastry-driven items.”
The details
Mexican Sugar is one of multiple concepts owned by Dallas-headquartered FB [Front Burner] Society. Magrann said the process of creating menu items for the restaurant is a collaborative effort between the company’s Founder and Chief Executive Officer Jack Gibbons, Culinary Leader Gustavo Fuentes, Director of Operations Justin Beam and herself.
“It's a tight group where we just really sweat the details,” Magrann said. “[We ask ourselves] ‘What is the presentation? Is it a good value for the guest? Will the portion be appropriate? Does it really hit that lighter, fresher, better category?’”
Going forward
In addition to the Mexican Sugar location in Legacy North in Plano, which is the flagship location and opened in 2013, there are locations in Uptown, Las Colinas and Houston. Construction is underway for another location in Addison with a planned September opening. Other expansion plans include a location in Austin Domain in 2026 and Frisco Fields in 2028.
“[We plan] to expand in other Texas markets outside of DFW,” Magrann said. “We think that just makes a lot of sense for the brand because Texas is home base for us. We love the customer base in Texas.”
