Plano staff shared an update with council regarding development surrounding the Plano Event Center during a briefing session Nov. 7.

Parks and Recreation Director Ron Smith said the city is getting closer to selecting a contractor that could complete required infrastructure work to allow for the future development of a hotel and parking structure near the event center.

What you need to know

Smith said the construction of street connections to East Spring Creek Parkway and a new sewer line connection need to be constructed before a hotel project can begin. He added that the lack of nearby lodging has had an adverse impact on the revenue for the center.

“The venue misses out on potential business opportunities because of the lack of an adjacent hotel,” Smith said. “The city has sought a hotel for this location since the facility opened in 1990 with no luck.”

Currently, the event center hosts between 250 and 300 events per year, Smith said, and the city has contracted Trigo to help bring in a hotel with a parking structure in the future.

Digging deeper

Infrastructure construction for the hotel is expected to be complete next fall, which could allow hotel construction to begin shortly after. Smith said the hotel construction could be complete in early 2026, assuming a fall 2024 start date.

He said the hotel will be a name brand and will also meet industry-recognized standards to be rated a four-star hotel. It will also have:
  • 175 rooms
  • A full-service restaurant
  • A 800-space parking garage

Smith said a resolution to award a construction contract for the necessary infrastructure will be brought before council at the Nov. 27 meeting.
