To compensate for adjustments made to Plano ISD’s schedule for the 2024-25 school year, city traffic staff have made adjustments to several school zone signals.

A resolution authorizing staff to adjust the school zone flashers around middle schools was approved by Plano City Council at the Aug. 12 meeting.

Ahead of the 2024-25 school year, Plano ISD will delay the release time for students in elementary and middle schools by five minutes, according to city documents. High school hours were also adjusted by five minutes.

To be compliant with state regulations, Plano’s transportation engineering staff determined that changes needed to be made to the timing of school zones for middle schools, per city documents.


Within the denoted school zones in the city, the speed limit for vehicle traffic during school zone times is 20 mph.

According to city documents, the speed limits in place for school zones are designed to mitigate risks of pedestrian and vehicle incidents.

Violations of the speed limit within a school zone carries a $500 fine, according to the ordinance.
