Utility relocations are still underway along SH 5 through downtown McKinney and construction continues on Medical Center Drive. Here are five updates on current or planned transportation projects in McKinney.

Upcoming projects
1. East Virginia Street improvements
Project: East Virginia Street will be reconstructed between Murray Street and Airport Drive. The project will add a new alignment and connection to Airport Drive. A roundabout will be constructed at the intersection of the realigned Virginia Parkway and Lively Hill.
Update: Design is 90% complete and the project is expected to go to bid later this year.

2. SH 5 traffic signalsProject: New span wire traffic signals will be installed at SH 5's intersections with Standifer Street, Smith Street and Enterprise Drive. Another signal will be installed at the intersection of SH 5 and Lamar Street In conjunction with the city’s reconstruction project along Lamar Street.
Update: Design is 90% complete and construction is expected to begin in late summer 2026. The new signals are expected to be operational by early 2027.

3. Bloomdale Road traffic signalsProject: New permanent traffic signals will be installed at Bloomdale Road's intersections with Hardin Boulevard and Community Avenue.
Update: Design is 60% complete and construction is expected to start in fall 2027. Signals are expected to be operational by early 2027.

Ongoing projects4. Medical Center Drive improvements
Project: Crews are reconstructing and widening Medical Center Drive between Frisco Road and Spur 399. When finished, the road will be a continuous four-lane divided roadway.
Update: Construction is underway and approximately 30% complete. Paving of the southbound lanes is underway and nearly complete. Traffic will be switched to the new pavement within the next one to two months.

5. SH 5 utility relocationsProject: Construction work will relocate city utilities, including water and wastewater lines, in advance of the planned reconstruction and widening of SH 5 by the Texas Department of Transportation. The first phase is under active construction while the second phase is currently being designed.
Update: Construction is about 70% complete. All utility relocations south of Eldorado Parkway have been completed and TxDOT’s project is underway. Construction is currently ongoing at Elm Street which will remain closed to traffic until early August. Various locations between Elm Street and US 380 will experience lane closures to complete remaining construction.
