Here are the latest transportation projects happening in McKinney this fall.

Ongoing projects

1. Custer Road widening

Crews are working to widen FM 2478, also known as Custer Road, from two lanes to a four-lane divided roadway, with the capacity to eventually expand to six lanes. Plans also include realigning the intersection at FM 1461. Crews are currently working on the pavement of the Wilson Creek Bridge, including pouring concrete. This work should continue for the next few weeks.

2. Stacy Road widening

Construction has been underway since November 2020 along Stacy Road between Custer Road and Ridge Road. The project will widen the roadway within the existing median to provide three travel lanes in each direction. In addition, the project will provide dedicated right-turn lanes at various cross streets and improve intersection operations at Custer and Ridge, as well as Alma Road and McKinney Ranch Parkway. As of this summer, paving between Alma and Ridge has been completed. The remaining paving will occur through the remainder of 2021 from Alma to Custer. Construction of this project will require daily lane closures from Custer to just east of Alma.

3. Virginia Parkway widening

Construction is making progress along Virginia Parkway between Custer Road and St. Gabriel Way/South Ballantrae Drive. Crews are working to widen the roadway within the existing median to ultimately provide three travel lanes in each direction. In addition, the project will provide dedicated right-turn lanes at various cross streets and improve intersection operations at Custer. Most of the new paving will be placed in the existing median, and existing trees that need to be removed for the project will be replaced at the end of construction along with additional median landscaping, McKinney Capital Improvements Manager Nick Ataie said.

Regional project

4. US 380 landscape enhancements

Work on US 380 to provide landscape enhancements and additional rights of way have been put on hold, according to TxDOT spokesperson Patrick Clarke. There have been some unexpected site issues because US 380 splits McKinney, Frisco and Prosper, he said. He added that some irrigation issues needed to be worked out with the cities. This has led to halting the project; however, work is expected to begin again by the end of October.

Timeline: October-TBD

Cost: $1.1 million
