Stan Penn, the owner of Dempsey’s Place in downtown McKinney, confirmed the bar will permanently close July 20. Penn cited the coronavirus pandemic as the reason for the closure and pointed out that Gov. Greg Abbott placed the blame of a recent spike in cases on bars and restaurants.

“When Governor Abbott, the leader of the tenth largest economy in the world, declares war on bars and restaurants, there will be casualties,” Penn said in an email.

He said he will unveil a new marketplace concept in the space later this year that will be an essential business. The new business is slated to offer basic sundries, groceries and convenience items. A kitchen will prepare a limited menu of items, such as burgers and pizza, and beer and wine will be available for on-premise consumption, he said.
