A $17 million project will expand care for mothers and newborns at Medical City McKinney.

Construction will begin in January 2023 on a major expansion and new patient tower at the hospital, according to a May 10 news release from Medical City McKinney. Construction will be done in multiple phases. The first phase will build out an additional 24,000 square feet for a 21-bed neonatal intensive care unit, 12 VIP postpartum suites, and a separate women’s services entrance for patients and visitors.

“The new addition will enhance Medical City McKinney’s exceptional maternity care,” Medical City McKinney CEO Ernest C. Lynch III said in the release. “This expansion will enable us to grow the number of deliveries and provide an outstanding experience for patients and families.”

Medical City McKinney delivered more than 2,000 babies in 2021, the release stated. Medical City McKinney offers private labor, delivery and recovery rooms; pain-management options; high-risk pregnancy care; a full-service newborn nursery; classes; adoption support; and more.

“The women’s expansion at Medical City McKinney will provide our growing community with the clinical excellence and amenities that they deserve,” said Laura Swaney, division vice president of women’s and children’s services for Medical City Healthcare, in the release.

In December, Medical City McKinney opened a three-story patient tower. The third floor of the patient tower is set aside for orthopedics, surgery and trauma patients. However, the tower provides Medical City McKinney with the ability to continue expanding up to five stories, and the first and second floors of the tower are planned for future growth for the hospital’s clinic and other projects, the hospital had stated.

The planned expansion for women’s services will involve this tower and is part of Medical City Healthcare’s major capital investment initiative of more than $1.4 billion spent or committed over five years. The initiative includes building expansions, facility enhancements and leading-edge technology, the release stated.

Construction for the women’s services expansion is expected to be complete by the end of 2023.
