The gist
McKinney City Council members are considering amendments to economic development agreements for each project at an upcoming meeting scheduled Jan. 6. Both amendments are listed on the council’s consent agenda.
If approved, agreements with developers of both projects would be amended to recognize updated timelines, according to city documents. The Sunset Amphitheater project, which broke ground in June with completion expected in 2026, is now expected to finish in 2027, according to an updated project schedule.
The Sunset Amphitheater is a $300 million project expected to support more than 1,300 jobs and generate more than $3 billion within the first decade of its opening, according to a city document. The amphitheater is now expected to be open for the 2027 touring season and could host up to 70 music shows a year.
The JW Marriott Resort hotel, which was scheduled to start construction by Dec. 31, 2026, is now scheduled to start construction by April 30, 2027, according to an attached agreement. The original agreement was approved by council members in June.
Also on the agenda
Council members are also scheduled to consider funding for a small area plan for parts of SH 5 running through downtown McKinney. The plan would include a “community-driven vision" for redevelopment while identifying challenges and opportunities.
City staff pitched the idea to council members in November. The Tax Increment Reinvestment Zone No. 1 board approved appropriating $300,000 from its fund balance for the initiative in December.
