McKinney National Airport has secured additional grant funding from the Texas Department of Transportation, according to a city news release.

Gov. Greg Abbott signed Texas’ two-year state budget June 21, which included a $14.8 million TxDOT grant for eastside airfield projects at the airport. The money can be used for infrastructure projects that support commercial passenger service at the airport, according to the news release.

The overview

City officials plan to break ground on a new passenger terminal at the airport in July. Construction will add a 46,600-square-foot passenger service terminal on the east side of the airport.

The terminal will open with four gates and have the ability to expand to six gates, according to the airport’s website. Funding has been allocated and construction contracts have been approved by McKinney City Council.

“Commercial airline service at McKinney National Airport is soon becoming a reality,” Mayor Bill Cox said in a statement. “This $14.8 million grant brings us closer to completing the funding for our new passenger terminal and support facilities, which will be a modern gateway for local and visiting travelers.”

Commercial airline service is expected to launch in late 2026, according to the news release. For more information about the airport and the expansion project, visit www.FlyTKI.com.

The background

McKinney National Airport is one of six airports in Texas to receive grant money from the state budget. Other airports awarded include the South Texas International Airport and the Athens Municipal Airport, according to the budget.

About $106.8 million in total was awarded for airport projects across the state.

What they’re saying

State Sen. Angela Paxton and state Rep. Jeff Leach were “instrumental in getting funding for McKinney National Airport included in the state budget,” Cox said.

In a statement, Paxton said the $14.8 million investment creates “legacy-driven opportunities” for the growing economic and domestic needs of McKinney and the North Texas region.

“I’m truly blessed to represent the people of McKinney and thankful I could help secure this funding for generations to come,” she said.

The investment will “advance critical infrastructure projects that support economic growth, attract new businesses and enhance the quality of life for our residents,” Leach said in a statement.

“I was honored to play a role in securing this funding and proud to stand with our community in North Texas as we build an exciting future together,” he said.
