What you need to know
Frontier Waste Solutions will pick up trees at homes as part of regular trash-day pickup, according to the city of McKinney’s website. Residents can place the tree next to their trash container for pickup.
For residents who live in an apartment, there are two drop-off locations:
- Al Ruschhaupt Soccer Fields at Park View Avenue, south of Brook Drive
- Gabe Nesbitt Park at Hillsdale Drive, east of Alma Road
What else?
For trees to be recycled, city officials ask that residents remove all lights, ornaments and decorations from the tree. Trees should not be bagged, and any trees with ornaments or lights will not be collected and must be scheduled for a bulky item pickup, according to the city’s website. The city’s website also notes that trees with fake snow are not compostable.
Natural decorations, such as natural poinsettias, pine garland and wreaths, can also be placed in brown paper bags with any other yard waste on regularly scheduled trash days for collection. These items should be removed from any pots or containers, and have any lights or ornaments removed.
The plant materials will be taken to Living Earth, a recycling and composting center, to be “converted into mulch and a variety of compost products,” according to the city’s website.
