With an extreme cold warning is in effect for most of the North Texas area, McKinney ISD has cancelled school for Jan. 26-27.
What you need to know
An arctic cold front moved into the metroplex on Friday with cold rain transitioning into a wintry mix. Widespread wintry precipitation is expected to stop by Sunday afternoon but ice melting may not improve until Tuesday onward.
All MISD schools and facilities will be closed Jan. 26-27, according to the district's Facebook page, citing extreme forecasted weather and hazardous road conditions. The closure also applies to all school-related activities, after-school programs and extracurricular events.
“The decision was made to ensure the safety of our students, staff and families,” a district Facebook post states.
Forecasted temperatures are expected to rise above freezing by Tuesday afternoon, the post states, and district officials are expecting a normal school day for Wednesday, Jan. 28.
"We will continue to monitor conditions closely in cooperation with local emergency officials and will provide an update to families and staff on Tuesday," a district Facebook post states.
Looking ahead
MISD parents will be notified through the district’s email, phone call and text message system in the event of any further school closures or delays. Information will also be posted on the district’s Facebook and at www.mckinneyisd.net.
