Collin College will offer a new Medical Laboratory Technician degree program, following unanimous approval at a June 24 board of trustees meeting.

In a nutshell

The Associate’s of Applied Science program is the first of five new medical field degrees Collin College will launch. Four of those programs, including medical lab technician, will be at the Collin College Health Science Center slated for Frisco, Senior Vice President for Campus Operations Dr. Abe Johnson said at the meeting.

“This is in line with the master plan and strategic goals at the health sciences building,” Johnson said.

The other programs include radiology technology, nuclear medicine, catheterization technology and cosmetology, with cosmetology at the Courtyard campus in Plano, Johnson noted.

What else?

The Medical Laboratory Technician program will cost the school roughly $1.9 million over the first five years, according to the program’s projected budget, and completion of the program will require 60 credit hours, in compliance with Texas law for Associate’s Degrees, the meeting agenda states.

Johnson said the other four programs are still in development, and he hopes to bring them to the board for approval in August.
