A grant from the Texas Workforce Commission will support the expansion of adult education and literacy programs at Collin College, according to a July 30 news release.

The grant will provide $2.1 million annually for the next two years, and will contribute funding towards free services for adults in Collin and Rockwall counties.

The details

The grant funding will be used for programs in five areas, including:
  • Literacy education
  • Workforce preparation and training
  • English as a second language preparation and civics instruction
  • High school equivalency preparation
  • Career advancements services
The services supported by the grant will be available at no cost to participants, the release states. Over 1,500 students are expected to be served by Collin College in the coming year.

“This grant will support education attainment for persons who are in need of language or literacy skills to enter college or to advance their careers,” said Natalie Greenwell, executive director of Grants Management at Collin College, in the release. “Many adults may have put their education on hold due to life circumstances, and this grant will provide them with a valuable opportunity to catch up and gain the skills they need to succeed.”


The grant funding will cover a variety of expenses for the programs, the release stated, including:
  • Faculty salaries
  • Instructional materials
  • Exam preparation resources
  • Training programs
  • Administrative costs and some contractual expenses
Employment opportunities to support the programs were also created, with the college actively recruiting nine positions to support the grant program and eighth additional faculty positions for the ESL program.

Also of note

The grant funding will support the creation of a new training program for individuals at the Collin County Jail, the release stated.

The program will offer participants an opportunity to access training that can assist them in re-entering the workforce after their release.
