McKinney ISD students can expect school days to be three minutes longer in the 2024-25 school year.

The MISD board of trustees approved the academic calendar in a 4-0 vote Nov. 13. Board members Amy Dankel, Chad Green and Lynn Sperry were absent. Assistant Superintendent of Communications Shelly Spaulding presented the proposed calendar to the board.

The overview

Planning started in the summer with an academic calendar cohort of school districts in Collin County, Spaulding said. The cohort works to align breaks with surrounding districts while gaining feedback from community members, she said.

“Our cohort meeting exists so we can work together to build the best academic calendar for our students,” Spaulding said.

The Collin College schedule is also taken into consideration as a large portion of MISD students are involved in dual-credit courses, she said. All breaks in the 2024-25 school year align with the college’s.

Qualitative feedback is also gathered from committees consisting of teachers, staff, students and parents. Having at least one day off during a month was popular among students, Spaulding said. A day off each month was also beneficial for teachers who wanted more time to plan, work time and professional development, she said.

The school day will be extended by three minutes. This will allow two additional student holidays, Spaulding said.

“We believe this will be a win for our staff,” she said. “Having those two extra days will be beneficial for our teachers.”
