When Stan and Stella Lee bought Zen Hibachi & Sushi in January, the married couple retained the restaurant’s hibachi offerings but looked to amplify the sushi menu.

Meet the new owners

Stan Lee was a sushi chef in California for six years. When the Lee family moved to Texas, the couple noticed an industry void they felt they could fill and decided this was the right time to become restaurateurs.

“My menu is different from others around here,” Stan Lee said. “it’s like what you’d see in California.”

Stella Lee also has years of experience working in Korean and Japanese restaurants.

On the menu

The menu features mostly Japanese cuisine and some Korean food.

Hibachi options, which remain consistent from when the restaurant originally opened in January 2024, include a variety of teriyaki dishes including tofu, calamari, lobster and more. Other protein choices are filet mignon and New York steak. Hibachi meals, served with rice and vegetables, are prepared tableside by a hibachi chef.

Stan Lee said he added many new recipes to the sushi menu, which includes sushi and sashimi. Popular sushi rolls are the Curved Mountain Roll featuring baked salmon; the Zen Special Roll featuring crab meat and shrimp; and the Yellowtail Surprise Roll featuring spicy yellowtail and cucumbers.

“When customers experience my food, they always say ‘This is fresh and new’,” Stan Lee said. “I’m very proud of my food.’

Going forward

Stan Lee has extensive bartending experience including putting on bartending shows for thousands of people. He’d like to incorporate something similar at Zen Hibachi & Sushi.

While he doesn’t want the restaurant to become a big business, Stan Lee would like Zen Hibachi & Sushi to be a household name.

“When people think of hibachi or sushi, they think of here—Zen Hibachi & Sushi,” Stan Lee said.

Quote of note

“When I entered that [Zen Hibachi & Sushi] door, I remember feeling in my heart that I have to get this for my family and my future,” Stan Lee said. “I don't know why but it feels like my destiny.”
