Hospital representatives, health care officials, JE Dunn construction crew members and community members celebrated construction progress for an expansion project at Medical City McKinney during a Nov. 13 event.

“Thank you to everyone who has put so much heart into building this hospital,” Medical City McKinney CEO Mark Deno said. “God forbid you ever have to be on the patient side receiving care—you or your loved ones—but you are building an amazing place for us to take care of you.”

Marking a milestone

Medical City McKinney hosted the ceremony to mark a major construction milestone of its vertical expansion project.

The $142 million project includes adding two stories to the hospital’s east tower and expanding and renovating other service areas. Medical City McKinney’s bed count will increase by 46, bringing the total to 357 beds, a hospital representative said.

The project will add 105,600 square feet of new space and will increase capacity in the medical-surgical, step-down and intensive care units.

The expansion will also feature:
  • Four new operating rooms
  • A new post-anesthesia care unit
  • Additional space for day surgery
  • Two C-section suites
  • Six labor and delivery suites
Women’s services enhancements will include refreshed labor and delivery, C-section and postpartum suites, which will match the design and amenities of the Women’s Hospital that opened in November 2023.

“The hospital has been at full capacity for several years,” Deno said. “This is a dream come true to be able to take care of our growing population and community for years to come.”

The timeline

This construction project, which began in August and is expected to be completed in 2028, is one of several Medical City McKinney expansion projects, including the recently opened $50 million medical office building.

“This is one of the largest projects I’ve seen in the hospital industry,” said Sam Johnsen, Medical City McKinney chief operating officer. “It touches just about every aspect of the hospital.”

Medical City McKinney also opened a $17 million women’s hospital in November 2023 and a $64 million patient tower with an ER expansion in December 2021.

“These expansion projects are part of Medical City Healthcare's major capital investment initiative of more than $1.5 billion in capital improvements, spent over five years across the Medical City Healthcare system,” the release states.

What they are saying

At the conclusion of the ceremony, which included the signing of a construction beam, Bandy Baker, general superintendent of JE Dunn Construction, voiced appreciation to the medical staff for their patience during the construction process and to the construction crew.

“I want to give everyone out here in the hard hats a round of applause,” Baker said. “They’ve been working hard.”
