The McKinney Flour Mill, a historic property in East McKinney, will see a transformation with the addition of a boutique hotel and restaurant.
The mill property, which currently functions as an event venue with some small businesses operating in the building, will also see the addition of a bistro-style cafe, Property Manager James Bresnahan said.
The McKinney Flour Mill was opened in 1872 and operated as a functioning flour mill, according to its website. The property is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The details
The McKinney Flour Mill will see the upper floors of the building converted into a 35-room boutique hotel, Bresnahan said.
Bresnahan said the hotel will offer an opportunity for eventgoers, such as couples getting married at the event venue and wedding guests, to stay at the onsite hotel and minimize travel during events.
On the ground floor of the building, a new restaurant will be added, he said. The restaurant will have an elevated dining concept and serve American cuisine during lunch and dinner hours. The restaurant space will seat about 200 people, and include a mezzanine level with a roughly 30-seat private dining area.
Both new additions will be operated internally, as the business already has hospitality staff due to the existing event venue operations on the site.
“We're just going to transition all the staff and expertise... to run the hotel and the restaurants,” Bresnahan said.
Work on the transformation project to the property is set to begin in early 2025, Bresnahan said, noting that he expects a multi-year construction process.
Diving in deeper
Prior to the opening of the hotel and restaurant, a new eatery concept will open in the McKinney Flour Mill.
Also operated by staff at the McKinney Flour Mill, a bistro-style cafe is set to open in early 2025. Bresnahan said. The fast casual cafe concept will offer breakfast and lunch fare, such as sandwiches and wraps.
The opening of the bistro is aligned with the opening of McKinney’s new city hall, which will bring hundreds of city employees to the east side of SH 5, Bresnahan said.
A garden cafe concept is also planned for another spot on the site, he said.
Also of note
The Flour Mill’s newest event space is Prohibition, a speakeasy-style private venue, Bresnahan said.
The space can be rented for events such as rehearsal dinners and birthday parties, but Bresnahan said he aims to open the space up to the public through ticketed events featuring live music and craft cocktails.
Announcements about any events open to the public at Prohibition will be posted to the McKinney Flour Mill’s social media pages, Bresnahan said.
