McKinney residents and businesses will be paying more for recycling and trash pickup starting Jan. 1, 2023.

A fee increase for recycling and trash pickup was approved at a May 4, 2021, City Council work session as part of gradual increase over three years beginning July 1, 2021.

For residents, the monthly rate for one trash container and one recycling container is $16.96, not including tax or additional container costs. After the Jan. 1 increase of $0.96 goes into effect, residents will pay a total of $17.92 per month in collection fees for the standard amount of containers.

Commercial monthly rates will also increase by 5%.

Downtown businesses will have their own fee increase as they are considered in a separate subcategory of McKinney businesses in the fee ordinance, Assistant City Manager Steve Tilton said in the council work session.

“In the actual contract, their fee will go up based on the cost to them,” officials said.

The three-year plan to increase fees was necessary for Waste Connections, the company managing McKinney’s weekly waste removal. Increases in labor costs and expenses, changes to the recycling market, and performance improvements were all listed as reasons behind the increase, according to meeting documents.

The ordinance is up for review again on Sept. 30, 2024. The city will begin looking to renew its contract with Waste Connections or look for new bids from different waste management entities near the end of 2023.

“Outside of our contract with Waste Connections, we think that staff is going to have some new fresh ideas for the council to consider about what makes sense to take us into the next 10, 20, 30 years as a community,” Tilton said in the May 4 council work session.
