After public comment and executive session during Tuesday's City Council meeting, City Council members each spoke regarding Council Member La'Shadion Shemwell's arrest May 8.

Shemwell was arrested for allegedly speeding and failing to report a change of address or name, according to Collin County jail records.

“Councilman Shemwell’s behavior was not acceptable, plain and simple," Mayor George Fuller said during the meeting. "As a council body we will consider what action is taken in response. That action will be decided by the majority of council will be carried out swiftly. … We will, as a council, put this behind us and work together for the greatest good of McKinney. With regards to the racial divide discussion, that discussion deserves to be had on its own merit across the country for that matter.”

A consequence and action have not been determined by council as of Tuesday's meeting.

Council Member Chuck Branch said he hopes City Council can approve its ethics policy to keep council members on track.

Shemwell also stated that he will continue to serve on council and continue to lead. He also said he should have handled the situation better.

During Monday's City Council work session meeting, Fuller said council will not discuss remedies for council member misconduct. Fuller said he received multiple emails from residents wishing to speak on this agenda item.

“We are going to wait until tomorrow night to hear the comments from the public and then comments from council on this item,” Fuller said during Monday's meeting.

No action can be taken on this topic during Tuesday's City Council meeting unless it is placed on the agenda. As of 12:30 p.m. there is no agenda item related to remedies for council member misconduct.

A public comment period is standard for all council meetings at which time community members may address council.
