The Empress House debuts mahjong studio, boutique in downtown McKinney

The Empress House is now offering a space to play mahjong in downtown McKinney.

The boutique mahjong studio and social club offers a way for beginners to learn about and play mahjong, including through their introductory class Mahjong 101, which teaches players the skills needed to begin playing.

For both beginners and experienced players, the studio offers open play sessions where bookings are available for single seats as well as groups of four. The open play experience includes hostesses that can answer questions and assist with guided play, as well as snacks and beverages.

“We created a space at The Empress House to just create a community that can come into a beautiful place, play the game of mahjong, meet new friends and just really grow this community,” founder and owner Emily Bradford said.

Founding memberships are available that offer unlimited access to open play, early booking access and member-only events, according to the business’s website. The studio also offers private parties, and features a boutique with mahjong-themed items as well as hostess gifts.

Bradford, who has been playing mahjong for about a year, said she sought to bring the mahjong experience to north Dallas where there aren’t many existing mahjong studios.

“Mahjong is such a great game for your mental stamina,” Bradford said. “I always tell people it's not a difficult game once you learn it; it's a strategic game. Once you learn how to play, it will keep you sharp and you make great friends.”
