1. TxDOT’s $1B investment to extend Spur 399 around McKinney, connect to US 380
Roadwork is underway in southeast McKinney to expand Spur 399 with a vision to eventually extend the highway around the city.
The Texas Department of Transportation broke ground on a $157 million project this summer to expand the existing Spur 399 from four to six lanes. The project is one of three separate segments that aim to connect Spur 399 to US 380, TxDOT Public Information Officer Madison Schein said. Construction of the extension is estimated to cost $983 million in total to “address the congestion and improve mobility” in eastern Collin County, she said in an email.

3. New Texas state park to offer sneak peak with exclusive Jan. 1 guided hikes
Palo Pinto Mountains State Park is not slated to open until later in 2026, but guests are invited for a sneak peak of what the park has to offer with specialty day passes on New Year's Day.
Rangers at the park will offer guided hikes only on Jan. 1 to explore the park before it officially opens and provide a unique way to celebrate the new year, according to a news release.

6. QuikTrip off US 380 to open in early 2027
A new QuikTrip will be opening at the corner of US 380 and Copper Creek Road in Denton.
The gas station is currently in the development stage, a QuikTrip representative told Community Impact. Construction is expected to begin June 26, 2026, with the store currently scheduled to open roughly eight months later.
