McKinney Pharmacy, a compound pharmacy that has been in operations for 118 years, recently closed in McKinney, staff at the location confirmed. Customers who need to pick up medical equipment can do so at the store until Aug. 15.

Why it matters

Aaron Schatz, son of David and Elaine Schatz—owners of McKinney Pharmacy since 2009—said multiple attempts were made to sell the pharmacy following his father’s death in 2024 but all deals fell apart at different stages of the process.

“We made the difficult decision to close McKinney Pharmacy after many long discussions with my family,” Aaron Schatz said in an email. “We apologize to our customers for closing. It wasn’t done on a whim or without great and labored thought. My family and I appreciate everyone that walked through those doors over the years.”

Onsite staff said McKinney Pharmacy has been located at the current address on W. University Drive since the 1960s.

“McKinney Pharmacy has been proudly serving the McKinney area since 1907,” the company's website states. “Our family-owned, full-service compounding pharmacy is proud to offer our patients a premium level of care.”

What’s happening

McKinney Pharmacy prescriptions and the pharmacy’s compounding department have been relocated to City Drug in Van Alstyne, a sister store to McKinney Pharmacy, according to a sign on the door.

“As a courtesy, City Drug will ship your prescriptions to you for free through the end of the year if this is more convenient for you,” signage at the McKinney location states.
