Missouri-based Lean Kitchen is a healthy meal prep franchise, Jeana Penny said, adding that everything is made fresh in the on-site kitchen weekly.
The husband-and-wife team opened the business in McKinney in early 2024, which was the first Lean Kitchen to open in Texas.
The background
Jeana Penny said she previously worked in education, but left after 23 years. She said they had been meal prepping for several years and one day at work, she turned to co-workers and said, “One day, I’ll open a meal prep business.”
When she began considering a career change, she began looking into various meal prep business franchises. The first call was with Lean Kitchen, and she said following the call, she turned to her husband and said, “Cancel with everybody else.”
“They had real good energy,” co-owner Chris Penny said. “Everything they said was exactly what we talked about and were looking for if we were going to franchise.”
Chris Penny is a captain with the Sulphur Springs Fire Department and continues to work there.
What they offer
All of the meals are balanced, Chris Penny said, adding that they avoid using terms such as diet.
“Our, kind of, slogan is ‘The anti-diet diet club,’” Chris Penny said.
Lean Kitchen offers a mix of meals featuring chicken, beef, turkey and seafood options. In addition, it also offers snacks and breakfast items.
Jeana Penny said that although the menu rotates, on average, there are 26 options to choose from.
The cooler is stocked each Saturday, Jeana Penny said ,and Chris Penny added that Saturday, Sunday and Monday are the best days to come in as most options are available.
What makes it special?
Jeana Penny said when patrons come into the business, they can see the store’s operations, including the kitchen.
Additionally, the business offers online ordering for pickup and delivery, Jeana said and delivers to McKinney, Allen, Fairview, The Colony, Prosper and Frisco.
