Colmenero co-owns the business with her husband, who is from Delores Hidalgo, Guanajuato, Mexico, a region known for Talavera, a Spanish and Mexican pottery tradition characterized by its visual textures and emphasis on color.
Respecting the craft
According to the company’s website, Colmenero brings “vibrant colors and intricate designs of Mexican craftsmanship” to customers. The business offers a selection of hand-painted pottery that includes vases, dinnerware, decorative tiles and home accents.
The business is family owned, Colmenero said, adding that her brother-in-law also owns the manufacturing business where many of the items sold are crafted.
In addition to Talavera, Colmenero also sells terra-cotta pottery, metal art and chimineas, which are outdoor fireplaces made of clay.
Staying local
The building the business operates out of is her family’s former home, Colmenero said, adding that it has been transformed into a small business.
Colmenero said the business is popular, and many people traveling through McKinney will stop in to see what new items are in stock, adding she loves the relationship with customers. In addition, she said Colmenero Mexican Imports is important because it offers a chance for its customers to experience a new culture.
