At least one new car dealership is expected to open along US 75 in McKinney this year.

An approximately 18,000-square-foot CarMax is set to open during the last week of April at 1441 N. Central Expressway.

When CarMax opens, McKinney’s stretch of US 75 will be home to 17 car dealerships, including Mercedes-Benz of McKinney, Nissan McKinney and Bob Tomes Ford.

“Shopping among auto dealerships that are clustered together can be an added convenience and time-saver for customers because they are able to shop around and compare vehicles among the various dealerships at one particular destination area,” JM Dixon, a real estate manager for CarMax, wrote in an email. “Therefore, dealerships often find value in building store locations in these areas as it can lead to increased customer store traffic for everyone.”

According to existing city zoning, major stretches along US 75 are zoned for planned development district or planned center district use allowing for dealerships.

Samantha Pickett, a planning manager for the city, said as long as developments fit the zoning ordinance requirements, the site plan will be approved. Some ordinance requirements include street setbacks and elevation, Pickett said.
