Flower Mound was the 11th fastest-growing city nationally in 2016-17, according to new U.S. Census population estimates released 11 p.m. Wednesday.
Seven of the nation’s 15 fastest-growing U.S. cities hail from Texas, according to Census population estimates that rank percentage growth for municipalities exceeding 50,000 in population. Frisco, New Braunfels and Pflugerville topped the overall national rankings, and Georgetown—No. 6, McKinney—No. 9 and Cedar Park—No. 13—also made the cut.
Flower Mound’s population growth
This is the first time Flower Mound has ranked in the top 15 fastest-growing large cities and towns, according to the data. The city has added between 640 and 3,545 new residents each year over the past six years, according to Census estimates.
- 2016-17: 4.3 percent growth, adding 3,545 residents for a total estimated population of 76,681. Eleventh fastest-growing city in the U.S.
- 2015-16: 3.5 percent growth, adding 2,468 residents for a total estimated population of 73,547. 28th fastest-growing city in the U.S.
- 2014-15: 2.0 percent growth, adding1,414 residents for a total estimated population of 71, 253. 118th fastest-growing city in the U.S.
- 2013-14: 1.6 percent growth, adding 1,114 residents for a total estimated population of 69,650. 158th fastest-growing city in the U.S.
- 2012-13: 0.9 percent growth, adding 640 residents for a total estimated population of 68,609. 301st fastest-growing city in the U.S.
- 2011-12: 2.8 percent population growth, adding 1,818 residents for a total estimated population of 67,825. 38th fastest-growing city in the U.S.
The Lone Star State also dominated the 15 most-populated U.S. cities as of July 2017, with an estimated 2.3 million residents in Houston, which ranked fourth overall behind New York City, Los Angeles and Chicago. San Antonio (No. 7), Dallas (No. 9) and Austin (No. 11) remain unchanged in rankings, and Fort Worth became the 15th-largest city—knocking Indianapolis out of the top 15.
