The city of Dallas has approved more bond money to go toward construction at the Willie B. Johnson Recreation Center in Hamilton Park.

Senior activity and technology centers, a gymnasium and a parking lot expansion comprise work underway at 12225 Willowdell Drive. The construction is funded by the 2017 bond program that was approved by Dallas voters.

City Council approved no more than $560,431.54 to fund additional work at the facility during its May 25 meeting. The budget for the project is now $8.57 million, according to the approved resolution.

The change was necessary to comply with building code upgrades and to address changes in planned power delivery by Oncor Electric Delivery Co., council liaison Maddy Madrazo said in an email. Crews are also working to address damages to existing interior spaces that were caused by Winter Storm Uri in February 2021.

The 2017 bond program website lists the estimated completion date as May 27, but Madrazo said the work is now expected to be completed in September.
