The district previously made versions of both calendars available on its website in early October for residents to give feedback.
According to the approved calendars, the 2023-24 school year is expected to start Aug. 9 with 175 days of instruction, including 88 in the fall semester and 87 in the spring semester. Winter break is scheduled to be held Dec. 25, 2023-Jan. 9, 2024, with the final day of school set for May 23, 2024.
Other features of the 2023-24 academic calendar are a week off for Thanksgiving from Nov. 20-24, a weeklong spring break from March 11-15, and fair days for elementary and secondary schools in October. In addition, annual holidays, such as Labor Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Memorial Day and Juneteenth, are also included.
The district began using three academic calendars—base, intersession and redesign—across its campuses after the return of remote learning in 2021. The recent decision affects schools using the base, or traditional, calendar. According to the DISD website, 41 schools have an intersession calendar, which includes accelerated learning weeks, and five schools operate with a school day redesign calendar, which includes an extended 200-day calendar. The district has not made an announcement on schools using intersession and redesign calendars; however, decisions affecting those calendars will not affect breaks or holidays, according to an October press release.
Under the base 2024-25 academic calendar, the school year will start Aug. 7, 2024, with the school year set to end May 22, 2024. Winter break is scheduled to be held Dec. 23, 2024-Jan. 7, 2025. In addition, the calendar includes a week off for Thanksgiving from Nov. 25-29, 2024, and a weeklong spring break from March 10-14, 2025.
