In a nutshell
The district’s Long Range Planning and Citizens Bond Advisory Council committees, which were approved by the board Nov. 20, are working jointly to create a campus consolidation plan.
Superintendent Cory Wilson said school costs have continued to rise as revenue remains flat.
“This plan is going to be very hard, it’s going to be emotional work, but I do hope to bring a recommendation for closures this spring based on the committee recommendations,” Wilson said at a regular board meeting Dec. 18.
Wilson said the Long Range Planning Committee will also determine how district programming will fit in the long run. Other recently approved committees will work to plan the district’s next bond package to address mechanical, electrical and plumbing issues with schools in the district.
Public input
Four Keller Collegiate Academy students spoke at the board meeting Dec. 18. to share concerns about how the consolidation plan could impact the academy.
“Every year, we end up on the chopping block,” one student said.
The building for KCA was closed in 2024 due to two consecutive years of a budget shortfall. KCA classes are currently held at the Keller Center for Advanced Learning after the two schools consolidated.
KISD Chief Communications Officer Bryce Nieman said the district currently has no specific considerations on the table and no decisions have been made at this time.
“These are issues that the Long-Range Planning Committee will be considering over the coming months,” he said to Community Impact.
Looking ahead
The Long Range Planning Committee met for the first time the week of Dec. 15, Nieman said. Its next meeting is scheduled for Jan. 14 at 6 p.m. at the KISD Education Center.
While only committee members can participate in discussions, the meeting is open to the public.
