Of the seven committees for the 2025-26 school year, five of them were approved. A long-range planning committee and citizens bond advisory committee were tabled to be discussed in November.
The details
The committees will be fact-finding, deliberative, advisory and will not assume administrative duties or responsibilities, according to district documents. The board approved appointments for the following committees Oct. 23:
- Budget Committee
- District Educational Improvement Committee
- District of Innovation Committee
- Policy Review Committee
- Safety and Security Committee
“There’s a lot of people on that list that I didn’t know at all. Never spoken to or anything,” Coker said. “I can’t vote for something with my name attached to it with people I don’t know.”
The policy review and safety and security committees were approved unanimously.
The two tabled committees will be discussed in a future meeting Nov. 20. Board trustees shared concerns about underrepresentation for some areas of the district for the two committees.
“When we have some of these committees that are going to be helping navigate the future of the district and perhaps opportunities to fix infrastructure, I’m just a little concerned that we don’t have that cross-section that we were hoping to look for across the district,” Place 6 trustee Charles Randklev said.
KISD Superintendent Cory Wilson said the district would create a longer window in future years in an effort to even out representation.
The background
The district approved the creation of seven committees for the 2025-26 school year Aug. 28, according to district documents. Parents, community members and staff were given two weeks to apply for committee membership from Aug. 29-Sept. 12.
“This was a great way to fill our committees. I appreciate having the option of choosing and getting to see people’s credentials and what they said on their application,” Place 3 trustee Chelsea Kelly said.
