The ribbon-cutting comes a year after work on the building was completed in 2024.
The details
The new facility will be used to host sporting events for the district and has already provided space for other events like the district’s Angel Tree program during last year’s holiday season, Northwest ISD board president Jennifer Murphy said.
“It’s not just going to serve students, it’s going to serve the community as well,” Murphy said.
Murphy said the facility will likely be available for the local community to rent next year.
Construction for the new facility was funded through facility and capital improvement funds from a bond voters approved during the May 2023 election, Executive Director of Communications Anthony Tosie said.
The background
The McCreary Multipurpose facility was named after Dennis McCreary, a former administrator who led facilities growth and planning, according to previous Community Impact reporting.
McCreary’s daughter, Ashley Dixon, said the family was honored to be represented by the school.
“He was about support. He was about how to function and how to enable the district and staff and students to function in the optimal capacity,” she said. “This building emphasizes that by allowing [the district] to have that flexibility of being able to bring different organizations and different programs to this facility.”
Interim Chief of Facilities Sarah Stewart said construction for the facility was completed last year. She said the building used to be the competition gym for Gene Pike Middle School, which received a replacement campus in 2024, before it was renovated to become the multipurpose center.
“When we were going to tear the existing building down, we thought better to keep this part of the building because it can run on its own,” Stewart said. “We just had to add some more brick and just a few little things technology wise, but it had its own electrical room and was able to sustain on its own.”
