Diving in deeper

TEA’s interactive ratings database has highlights from each KISD school’s rating, which are based on State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness, or STAAR, results. Key rating metrics in the database include:
  • Overall rating and score
  • Student achievement
  • School progress
  • Closing the gaps
The district as a whole received the following ratings for each category for the two school years:
  • B in student achievement
  • C in school progress
  • B in closing the gaps
The aspects that these metrics measure include whether students are ready for the next grade level, whether students met testing expectations, how they perform over time and how a school is ensuring the success of a student, according to the TEA website.

“The TEA's district and campus ratings are primarily based on STAAR results. While we believe measurement and accountability are critical to growth and achieving positive outcomes, Keller ISD evaluates progress by more than a single test administered on a single day. The state’s accountability ratings are simply one point of data among many that we consider when determining success,” Keller ISD said in a statement.

The backstory

The ratings for the 2023-24 school year were delayed for nearly one year after 33 districts sued the TEA last August. Texas’ 15th Court of Appeals ruled in July that the 2023-2024 ratings could be released. The 2025 ratings were released Aug. 15, which was on time, per state law.

Thirty one percent of school districts statewide improved year-over-year in the 2024-25 school year, according to previous Community Impact reporting.
