Northwest ISD is looking for fathers, grandfathers, uncles and other father figures to volunteer with a program designed just for them.
The details
According to a district Facebook post, the program known as Watch DOGS—or Dads Of Great Students—is designed for men who can volunteer for at least one day a year.
The post stated that Watch DOGS can choose from among several activities to do with students at participating schools including:
- Read and work on flash cards
- Play at recess
- Eat lunch with their child
- Watch the school entrances and hallways
- Assist with traffic flow
- Mentor students
The context
The Watch DOGS website states that the program was created in 1998. More than 6,800 schools across the country and in several in other countries have launched Watch DOGS programs.
What you need to know
On the day of their participation, Watch DOGS volunteers are given a review of their assignment. They also wear an official T-shirt or vest identifying them as Watch DOGS, according to a district volunteer information website.
If a father, grandfather, uncle or other father figure wants to become part of the Watch DOGS program at their student’s school, the website states that they should contact the school directly. If the school in question doesn’t yet have a Watch DOGS program, those interested in starting a program can visit the Watch DOGS website.
