The Keller City Council approved a contract for Keller Sports Park renovations, marking a major milestone as the project moves past the conceptual stage.

At its March 22 meeting, the council unanimously voted to approve a $2,332,300 agreement with architectural and engineering design firm Parkhill in Arlington to provide design services and contract administration for the Keller Sports Park renovations, according to the agenda item’s memo.

The renovations to the Keller Sports Park will include a vast variety of improvements, such as paving, landscaping, lighting, drainage channels, baseball and softball field renovations, dugouts, paving, restrooms, concessions, shade structures, fencing, sidewalk, synthetic turf, a multiuse field and more, according to the project’s construction area summary.

The $2.33 million will come from the city’s parks capital improvement fund, the memo states. The entire project will cost about $26 million.

Now that the contract has been approved by council, Parkhill will take the project through multiple steps for surveying, construction document reviews, construction bidding and construction administration phases, which will all take place throughout the rest of 2022 until July 26, 2023, when the construction kickoff meeting happens, according to the project’s schedule.

The project is set to reach completion and closeout Dec. 4, 2024, the schedule shows.

The concept plan for the Keller Sports Park renovations was developed by the Keller Sports Park Task Force. However, a task force led by the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board was first created in fiscal year 2015-16 to make a master plan for the sports park, according to the memo. While a master plan was created, no action was taken.

In 2021, the Keller Sports Park Task Force was then created to look at future improvements to the sports park, the memo states. The task force consists of members of Keller City Council, the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board, the Keller Youth Association, the Keller Soccer Association, Alliance Rugby Club, Keller Lacrosse Association and the Keller Saddle Club.

The Keller Sports Park Task Force met many times from August 2021 to February 2022 to develop the concept plan, according to the memo. Parkhill was also involved in the discussions.

“It’s a big deal,” Keller Mayor Armin Mizani said at the meeting. “It’s a big deal for the city of Keller. This is something we've talked about for years.”
