The details
According to the company website, TORC develops technology to commercialize self-driving, long-haul trucks for the freight industry.
Company officials chose the AllianceTexas site for its autonomous hub due to Dallas-Fort Worth being a centralized location for freight in the nation and the close proximity to the I-35 corridor.
The new center will be dedicated to the company’s autonomous testing and control centers for fleet management and operations
According to a company news release, utilizing the hub will allow its automated trucks to provide freight services along I-35 between Dallas and Laredo. With more than 15,000 truck crossings per day and $320 billion in total trade last year, Laredo is the largest economic port of entry in the United States.
What they're saying
“We envision autonomous trucks revolutionizing the freight industry, making it more cost effective, safe and reliable for our customers,” said Chief Commercial Officer Andrew Culhane. “This hub will be the proving ground that can really show the impact of autonomous trucking technology.”
The backstory
According to the company’s website, TORC was founded in 2005 by a group of Virginia Tech students who wanted to carry on their work on autonomous vehicle software.
In addition to the new DFW location, the company maintains four other offices in the United States and Canada.
