Grapevine City Council authorized a midyear pay adjustment, which will provide an average increase of between 5%-6% for all sworn police and fire personnel during its March 19 meeting.
What you need to know
According to city documents, staff evaluate the city’s pay for public safety positions and compare it to 18 other cities in the state. The city’s goal is to be in the 50th percentile for pay, Director of Human Resources Rachel Huitt said.
Several cities made pay increases effective Jan. 1 instead of Oct. 1—the start of the new fiscal year—per city documents. Huitt said there has also been a shift by cities to maintain an edge in compensation, which leads to changes to pay plans throughout the year.
“We’re looking at them three, four and five times per year,” Huitt said.
What else?
The midyear market adjustment is not the first pay raise for police and fire within the city this fiscal year. As part of the adopted budget for the 2023-24 fiscal year, public safety employees received a general 2% salary increase and a 3% or 5% step increase.
The anticipated impact to the city’s finances is a little over $374,000 for the rest of the fiscal year, which ends Sept. 30, according to city documents.
Huitt said the midyear pay adjustment will kick in starting with the first pay cycle in June.
