After months of anticipation, Frisco ISD announced the mascot of its upcoming high school on social media at 4 p.m. March 15.

Students will be called the Emerson High School Mavericks, according to a video the district released on Twitter.

The process to choose the mascot was democratic, Emerson High School Principal Kristen Sommers told Community Impact Newspaper in November.

"Students get to have a say in ... what’s going to become the legacy of this campus," Sommers said.

Sommers said short of picking school colors—which needed to be done in the construction period, well before the building opens—incoming students would have a role in establishing each aspect of the school’s identity, including everything from instructional preferences to the school mascot. Other mascot suggestions included the Grizzlies, Blue Jays and Rattlers, per the video.

Emerson High School is set to open in the fall at 6300 Collin McKinney Parkway, McKinney.
