Owner of Renew Coffee N Bakery Peng Ren has almost a decade of experience in coffee making. He had a partnership with five coffee shops in China before he and his partner decided to open a store in Frisco in early 2020.

Ren and his partner Xue Wen came up with the name Renew as a creative way of combining their two last names, with the name Ren making up the first part of Renew and Wen’s making up the last part, only backwards. The name helps evoke what they hope to associate the coffee shop with, Ren said.

“We just want to let more people have this kind of lifestyle, where they can try quality coffee, meet with friends and have a place like this to hang out with someone,” he said.

The coffee shop is located just off Frisco Square at the intersection of Main Street and Coleman Boulevard. It was exactly what Ren and Wen wanted because it was close to a lot of apartments, which meant a built-in customer base, Ren said.

“The location is exactly what we wanted because there’s lots of apartments, which means we have lots of potential customers. And these people would be the local community,” he said. These customers would be the reason the shop was able to survive the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, he said. Even though the shop was so new, the shop’s customers had remained faithful and encouraged their friends to try it out, Ren said.

Renew’s best-selling latte is its Spanish latte, Ren said without hesitation. The drink originated from Spain and is made with sweetened condensed milk, but Renew adjusts the sweeteners to enhance the drink’s flavor, Ren said.

“Right now, a lot of people are looking for a healthy style, and they’re not really looking for a strong sweet flavor,” he said. “In [the Spanish latte] you can taste not only the sweet but also the coffee. It’s really great.”

The shop also provides quality food items with its own in-house baker, Ren said. Renew has croissants and croissant sandwiches available during weekdays for members of the working community who want to grab a quick bite and a cup of coffee, Ren said. On the weekend, however, Renew brings out its desserts, from cakes to tiramisu, he said.

“We have a lot of different styles. They can sit down and try the coffee with the sweets we have,” Ren said.

In the two years its been open, the store has grown from three employees to 11, Ren said. It’s open every day, even on holidays.

“We know no matter what day it is, there is always someone who needs their coffee,” he said.
