Construction crews are improving several roads and sidewalks near the University of North Texas. Check out these five road projects currently underway. This list is not comprehensive.

Welch Street

Welch Street between Prairie and Highland streets, and between Hickory and Mulberry streets, is closed for gas line replacements. The stretch of road between Prairie and Highland streets is scheduled to reopen Nov. 24, according to UNT’s construction report.

Fry and Hickory streets


The lighting and crosswalk at the intersection of Fry and Hickory streets are receiving accessibility upgrades. The intersection will receive sidewalk improvements and ramps, as well as additional lighting, Denton Traffic Engineer Chandra Muruganandham said. The project is expected to be completed in late October.

General Academic Building sidewalk

The sidewalk west of the General Academic Building is currently being replaced and is closed to foot traffic. The project is expected to be completed Oct. 24, according to UNT’s construction report.

Bonnie Brae Street


Construction crews are currently widening Bonnie Brae Street from two to four lanes, as well as installing sidewalk and lighting improvements along the roadway. Construction is scheduled to be completed in November 2026, Capital Improvement Projects Director Seth Garcia said.

I-35 southbound exit and northbound ramp

The southbound exit to North Texas Boulevard, and the northbound on-ramp from North Texas Boulevard onto N. I-35 E. are both permanently closed, UNT Facilities and Event Manager Cameron Wilson said. The ramps closed Oct. 6, as part of the Texas Department of Transportation’s I-35 construction project, according to UNT’s facilities website. New exits will be added later in the project, which is scheduled to continue through 2026.
