Allen City Council unanimously approved spending $264,280 to purchase fitness equipment for the Joe Farmer Recreation Center at a Jan. 13 meeting.

Director of Parks and Recreation Kate Meacham said community feedback at Joe Farmer Recreation Center consistently requests additional equipment.

“We really have a need based on the feedback that we’re hearing from our 3,200 members,” Meacham said.

The additional equipment will be purchased from Team Marathon Fitness and includes:
  • Three half-rack workout stations
  • Two half-rack Smith machines
  • Two rowing machines
  • Free weights
  • Three treadmills
  • One step mill
  • One elliptical
  • One recumbent bike
Meacham said staff plan to relocate some of the equipment into one of the racquetball court rooms, which will add an additional 1,570 square feet of workout space.

Looking ahead

The new equipment is scheduled to be installed in April, according to Meacham’s presentation to council. Allen City Council will meet again Jan. 27 at 6 p.m. for a work session and at 7 p.m. for its regular session.
